The creative minds behind Extending Grace are Susan Mocker and Devon Cretella. We have both been creating for many years, Susan has been doing shows as far back as the 70’s. We started working on some projects together around 2009 and jumped into our first outside show in 2010. We daydreamed about opening a shop, even scouting out locations. We gradually turned this into a business by taking very small steps for a few years, and then a giant leap in July of 2016. We now have a beautiful storefront location in Hubbard, Ohio and just celebrated our 2nd anniversary. We have both been inspired by our wonderful moms, other artisans, and lots of publications (we both have an embarrassing amount of old art and home dec magazines in our basements!)
Our store consists of a blend of vintage and antiques, along with paint, transfers and supplies for our customers to create their own furniture masterpiece. We also carry some new retail items that blend with our vintage merchandise. We have great studio space in the back of our store where we teach classes. We love developing relationships with our repeat customers. They are such a support and encouragement to us.
Our mantra is “Do something creative every day!”, so we try to enable folks with everything they need to do so, even if it is just encouragement. Susan mans the store on a daily basis, and squeezes time in between customers to paint furniture and accessories. Devon still has a full time job but can be found at the shop on weeknights and weekends. Both of us love working with Fusion Mineral Paints, Iron Orchid Design products, Monahan Papers, found objects, and of course, furniture!
We have been fortunate to partner with some other very talented collectors and artists in our store and host many events through the year with other businesses in our town. These take work but are very beneficial to all of us and bring lots of positive attention to our town. We have also had some really good press with a few local television stations that host morning shows, even to the point where they have called us to fill last minute time slots.
Our best tips for doing shows would be to engage with your customers, be confident in your work, drink lots of coffee and have enough change!
